A Clearwater, Florida Chapter of the Alan Goldberg Wing Chun Kung Fu Lineage Wing Chun is an extremely close quarter combat system first made popular by Bruce Lee. It is a scientifically and mathematically formulated Kung Fu system that originated in China approximately 400 years ago. Concept and Theory-Based There are ten core concepts and theories that Wing Chun Kung Fu is comprised of: 1. Triangle/Pyramid concept 2. Centerline concept 3. Economy of motion concept 4. Simultaneous attack and defense concept 5. Straight line concept 6. Four corners concept 7. Face to face concept 8. Immovable elbow concept 9. Trapping hands concept 10. Bridge hands concept The concepts of Wing Chun Kung Fu are used together in order to use the minimum amount of effort and energy to gain the maximum result. Wing Chun Kung Fu is different from other martial arts because it utilizes the stronger persons’ energy and force against them to defeat their opponents through the use of leverage, proper energy and sensitivity training. Chi Sao (Sensitivity Training) One of the trademarks of Wing Chun is its Sticking Hands (a.k.a. Chi Sao) training. In Chi Sao, students learn proper distancing, body mechanics, and non- telegraphic movement. This is accomplished by learning to feel your opponent’s movement. Through Chi Sao, the student learns to feel when opponent is about to exert force upon them. What the Beginner Should Expect Wing Chun is a very fluid and economical martial art that focuses on theory and concept -- not on brute force! The system is realistically grounded for real street survival. A student will initially devote time to understand and apply Wing Chun concepts through training drills, theories and concepts. The class is divided into both application and lecture. This is an important element of Wing Chun that allows students to learn to react in a way that makes sense to them. Wing Chun Kung Fu is the ideal martial art for people of all body types and sizes. Therefore, a lot of the training is done with multiple partners, sharing insight and learning through trial and error. This type of training lets all the students feel different energies and view things from a different perspective. In Wing Chun, you (the student) are more important than the system. Therefore, you learn to utilize your own strengths and manipulate the opponents’ weakness. Therefore, Wing Chun teaches students not to accumulate a large arsenal but rather to throw away the nonessentials and use natural advantages.
